Time Trap
The cave out of sync
They say that to know if time runs fast or slow depends on the side of the bathroom door you are. This is exactly the theme explored by “Time Trap” (USA, 2017). Even with appearance of family movie, “Time Trap” brings some very interesting proposals and an amazing ending.
The problem with cinema today is that original ideas seem to be lacking, especially when the genre is science fiction. I confess that I was reluctant to watch “Time Trap” because it seemed to be more of the same, themes of classic films reheated as remakes.
When Professor Hopper (Andrew Wilson) disappears, while researching missing hippies in a cave region, his students and assistants Taylor (Reiley McClendon) and Cara (Cassidy Gifford) decide to look for him. As the region is difficult to access, they will need a 4×4 car, and for that they ask their friend Jackie (Brianne Howey) to go along. The problem is that Jackie needs to take care of her sister Veeves (Olivia Draguicevich) and her classmate Furby (Max Wright), and so they are included in the expedition.
The problems begin when the youth descend on one of the entrances to the cave. The ropes they used to get down break and now they need outside help to get out. Furby had stayed outside, but when he decides to go down, he falls during the attempt.
The guys discover that something strange is happening, and that there are other people in the cave – dangerous and aggressive people. It doesn’t take long for them to come to the most bizarre conclusion, that time in the cave runs slower than outside.
The film continues in a bizarre mix of teenagers, cavemen, cowboys, aliens, Spanish explorers, hippies, fountain of youth – and the interesting thing is that it all makes sense!
“Time Trap” is a very cheap production, with unknown actors, few special effects and the budget is estimated around a million dollars – a bargain considering Hollywood standards. The movie was well received by the public and won the Most Innovative Narrative feature award at the Hollywood Film Festival.
One curiosity that interests the boys of the 1960s is that the place where “Time Trap” was filmed is known as the Bronson Caves, used as the Batcave of the Batman series starring Adam West and Burt Ward.
“Time Trap” is expected to debut in the coming months on the Netflix streaming service.
